Nice Weekend

21 06 2010

I have just had a thoroughly nice and relaxing weekend on the Isle of Wight.

H had just finished a night shift so we went over on Saturday morning on the Catamaran and then took the old train up to Shanklin.  After we had eaten dinner with H’s Nan we headed back to her mums, where H had a well earned snooze and I walked Dave the Jack Russell up in the fields, losing him for 10 minutes before he popped up from a hedge beside me.

We had a lovely meal out on Saturday night and a good nights sleep, waking up to a beautiful day.  We headed out for what turned out to be a monster walk up over the Downs and through Luccombe Chine to the Bonchurch Inn for a well earned Cider and a long walk back along the coast.  I finished the weekend being incredibly relaxed and feeling fit (I think that I need to get a dog to walk) and not wanting to come back to work today, but to spend the week in the sunshine.

Chock’s Away

17 03 2010

Yesterday afternoon I was taken up in a 2 seater aeroplane (an Ikarus C45 for those of you who care) by one of my colleagues.  After a brief overview of the plane and our pre-flight checks we left from Popham and headed on a bearing towards Four Marks before heading to Petersfield.  At this turn we radioed Air Traffic Control to see if we could transit the Southampton airport Airspace.

Brief note here, something that I learnt yesterday, a small plane can fly pretty much anywhere it likes as long as it is under 2000ft.  Over this you get into the Airspace of Airports and you have to ask for permission to cross them.

Unfortunately as it was heavy traffice we had to stay low over Portsmouth, but as a result I got some Photo’s of my parents house, my flat and some great ones of Fratton Park.  As we headed out to sea we turned again and headed west along the Isle of Wight, turning at the Needles and coming back Eastwards past Shanklin and Sandown.  I was allowed to take the controls and do a figure of 8 over H’s mum’s place.  After messing about for a bit we headed for a landing at Bembridge where Mike had to adjust quite a lot because he had come in a bit too high.  Touch down was pretty soft and we had to do a few checks  before we had a cup of tea and a sandwich and then headed back up again.

After a straight run back to Popham we landed after watching the 1950’s Antonov do a loop of the airfield.  All in all this is a brilliant way to spend an afternoon.  Massive thanks to Mike for taking me up.

There are more photo’s on Flickr, so click on the link over there.

Review of 2009

4 01 2010
I have been neglecting this blog for a while and concentrating on my photo blog, which I really enjoy doing.

So to kick off this year, I thought that I would do a kind of review of the year for 2009.  I don’t think I am doing a Spex awar this year, mainly because I can’t be bothered.  I am getting Lazy I think.

January started off with New Year in the most random pub in the world and a trip to a brewery for May-Z’s birthday, and then not a great deal happened, until February when I started going to Gigs again, Iglu and Hartley was the first of the year.

In March, not a lot happened again, but I saw a couple more bands.  April was great though, I met the wonderful H and we had a lot of fun.  I also formed the Victorian Gentlemans Amaretto Drinking Club (Fingers Up) in a pub in Worcester and went to Thorpe Park for the first time that year.

May was pretty good, my birthday was superb, we had a lot of fun, and then I went on Safari, this took me until mid June and was one of the most amazing things that I have ever done.  June came and went with more gigs and a trip to the Isle of Wight.  July flew past with Mark Cavendish winning 6 stages of the Tour De France and the Ashes starting.

August saw the completion of the Ashes, with England victorious, me failing to walk the Southdowns Way because of injury.  September included Bestival, which was superb, (Elbow were sublime) and Love Albert Road Day which was good too.

October was my month of blogging and to be honest it is some of the worst things ever written, I did start taking a lot of photos though.  In November I saw the Flaming Lips, which was about the only thing I did that month.

December flew past, with ATP and christmas, and I cooked for H on New Years Eve.

All in all, not a bad year.

Happy Birthday

Its going to be good.

Island Life

29 06 2009

I finished work early on friday and myself and H got on the Ferry on a blisteringly hot day to go to the Isle of Wight. After meeting her mum and brother we headed to the local for a few jars, which turned into a few more after closing time.

Waking up on Saturday slightly worse for wear, we headed out to west Wight and Alum Bay, a place famous for its 21 different colours of sand. The cost of this place is extortionate, with parking being £4 and the little cable car that takes you up and down the cliff being £3 per person each way. We decided to take the free option and walk down the 188 steps. This is worth the exercise, because you get better views of the Needles lighthouse from here.

We spent a couple of hours on the beach before leaving to get some lunch and a pint at the Wight Mouse Inn. I had a nice ale called Lemony Cricket which had a nice refreshing citrusy taste.

After lunch we headed to Carisbrooke castle in Newport to have a look around at some historicalness. The castle had once been prison to Charles 1st (who tried to escape twice, but got stuck in the window frame on one occasion) and whose daughter died there after catching a chill from playing bowls in a spring shower.

In the evening we headed for a Tapas meal before having a relatively early night. The next day we headed for a walk along the coast from Shanklin to Sandown and back again, before having lunch with H’s Nan.

The weather was beautiful all weekend and I had a great time, and I look forward to coming back again.  Shame its back to work again today.
