Active Weekend

20 04 2010
Why is the weather mocking me so much, I need to be outside on a day like today.  I have had such an active weekend that I want to be out there again.
I woke up on Saturday and went out for a massive walk, I reckon it was about 10 miles, it was a beautiful cloudless day.  With the Volcanic ash of doom about there were no planes, so in some parts it was incredibly silent, but walking through the fields was nice.
H came round later on Saturday afternoon after work and after much deliberation we decided that we would go to the pub, so we went to the Ship at Langstone, and sat by the sea drinking a nice pint of Fullers Discovery, which I do like.

Reflection from Hayling Bridge

On Sunday we got our bikes out after we had decided that we were going to  ride to Hayling Island.  We left from mine and cycled down to Farlington before heading along the marshes to Langstone.  We crossed the bridge and headed up the old Hayling Billy Railway line, which was closed due to the Beeching railway reforms and is now used by vast amounts of Walkers, Cyclists and Horse Riders.  Once we had reached he end we decided to ride along to the Ferryboat Inn and have a pint in the sun, which was lovely, before riding back.

This is about a 20 mile round trip (I just Google mapped it, and its not far off as the cycle path runs down by the road).  I am incredibly impressed as before last week H hadn’t been on a bike for over 10 years.  The padded shorts she has purchased are obviously working.
Later on Sunday afternoon we went and had dinner sat in my parents back garden, which was lovely and warm.  The rubbish thing is I am wishing the week away, because I want it to be next weekend now so that I can do this sort of thing again.

Wish I Knew more Spurs Fans

12 04 2010
Well, well, well, you would not believe it would you.  Football, its a funny old game isn’t it.  Pompey, struggling with debts, dodgy owners, transfer embargo’s, administration and points deductions were relegated on Saturday.  West Ham had won one-nil to make it mathematically impossible for us to stay up.  It was a sad day, but one that had been coming for a long time.

At least we had one last hurrah at Wembley on Sunday in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham.  Nobody thought that we would do well, I just hoped that it wasn’t an embarrassing scoreline.  Spurs had benefited most from our downfall, with Jowly Insurance hound and former manager Harry Redknapp picking over the carcass for our best players. To make it even easier for he

Ex-Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp

wouldn’t let Jamie O’Hara play in the semi.

To have our makeshift team facing up to Spurs was a massive task.  But to a man, our team played like heroes.  Over the 90 minutes it was an even game, with real end to end stuff.  Chances were squandered at either end, with David James making some world class saves (C’mon Capello, pick him for the world cup) and Mullins, Moekoena, Finnan and Rocha (didn’t get sent off, which is a first) making last ditch tackles all over the place.  Kevin Prince-Boateng and Hassan Yebda both recently back from injury played like men possessed, Michael Brown was solid in midfield and Marc Wilson played the game of his life.  Dindane and Piquionne ran their socks off and all will deserve a day off today.

After 90 minutes for it to be nil-nil was a massive achievement.  For the next 30, Pompey fans would go through a whole range of emotions.  9 minutes into extra time a dubious free kick was awarded, Dawson slipped and Piquionne scored a deserved goal.  the roar from the TV was deafening, the roar from my livingroom was pretty loud too, as me and the house-mate jumped off the sofa.

2 minutes later we screamed in despair as Crouch knocked one in for Spurs, and then cheered as for some reason be-known only to the referee it was disallowed.

The second half of extra tike was played at the same pace, lightning quick end to end stuff.  Palacios brought down Dindane in the area and we had a penalty.  Kevin Prince-Boateng slotted home the penalty and al of the Pompey fans went mental.  The spurs fans went home.

The stats might show that Tottenham dominated the game, which according to Harry Redknapp they did, but it doesn’t change the fact that they lost 2-0.
I really wish that I knew some Spurs fans.

Tuesday night was my debut as quiz master in the Sunshine inn.  It was down to me as we won the quiz the month before.  The winner of the first quiz each month has to write the quiz for the next month.   After much Umming and erring I decided that I was going to do a travel quiz.  I managed to do 9 musical intro’s of songs with place names in the titles, varying from Led Zeppelin (Kashmir) to Stiff Little Fingers (Alternative Ulster) and Editors (Munich).  I think it all went down quite well.   The picture round was on famous buildings and the cities that they are in.  So there were pictures of the Taj Mahal., Brandenburg gate, Eiffel tower and Burj Al Arab hotel, as well as a few more obscure ones.    The main quiz was divided up into sections with 5 in each group.  I have posted the questions below.  People told me that it was interesting and they enjoyed it, which I am glad about.
